The background
To help support Sheba’s involvement in the world’s largest coral restoration program and the global campaign HOPE GROWS, we created a collection of 11,269 sustainable Virtual Reef NFTs on the carbon-efficient Flow blockchain.
The execution
The Virtual Reefs are dynamic, living NFTs featuring vibrant coral on Reef Stars – artificial reef structures.
We created 45k+ 3D exported scenes to represent the various stages of growth of the 11,2k original scenes, exporting them all to be viewed on the web.
And, unlike other NFT projects, you can actually navigate and interact with each 3D scene full of moving fish and coral, unique to your individual NFT. The animations of fish swimming around your coral reef visualise your contribution to the Indonesian coral reef restoration project.
The results
With 100% of the proceeds going to fund more reef restoration projects worldwide, this was a world-first project that showcased the power of Web3 technology to drive positive social change.
The launch of the Virtual Reefs invited ocean lovers everywhere to help play a vital part in the restoration. From sales and resales of these Virtual Reefs to works of art and events, the launch of these NFTs created a community that will create an ongoing source of funding for reef restoration.
