The Hoxton Window Project is hosted by UNIT9 and curated by Anrick Bregman. Our premise is simple: we have four windows overlooking Hoxton Square, and we want to keep those windows covered with interesting art, whatever form that takes. We welcome all different types of artists, from illustration and graphic design to projections or interactive pieces... Send us your idea, with a link to any relevant work, or your portfolio. hoxtonwindow@unit9.com

It was great to be asked to contribute to the Hoxton Window Project and get our ideas out there on those huge windows. We wanted our design to be tied to its context, reflecting the eclectic history of the square back on its self. To do this, we chose to play on the square’s ecclesiastical past by using the churches technique of celebrating people and events through the use of Stained Glass. This also contrasted nicely with the rigid frameless glazing of the Unit9 windows. Looking at the square’s past we felt the people really made the place so decided to dedicate each of the three windows to one of the square’s most influential people. In our minds these were John Newton, the clergyman who wrote ‘Amazing Grace’, Peter Durand, a merchant who invented the process of tinning and preserving food and lastly, Eddie Piller, the founder of the square’s first nightclub, The Blue Note, which signalled the tide of the creative industries to the area. The title of the piece ‘How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me’ quotes a line from Amazing Grace, but also hints at the many revivals the square has had during its life.

It was rather interesting to get used to working on a vertical surface instead of a desk. After I started to look at it as a big computer screen that was backwards it made a lot more sense! I really pleased with how the project turned out especially the script type I did for the HOXTON WINDOW PROJECT section.
I was a little concerned about whether I was going to suck dry UNIT9′s entire petty cash with my project using all these solid blocks of colour but surprisingly it wasn’t half as bad and I really enjoyed the ‘colouring in’, – very relaxing. I wanted to inject some colour into this (not very sunny) month with a bold piece, that not just sits there to be looked at but interacts with the people in the square. Even if you don’t look, you might be watched!
